Honoring Eric Kolvig

Dear Sangha Friends,

It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that our beloved teacher and Dharma friend, Eric Kolvig, passed away peacefully last Tuesday at his home in Laconia, New Hampshire. Eric was a dedicated Dharma teacher in the Insight Meditation tradition, sharing his wisdom for 30 years before retiring in 2015. Throughout his teaching career, he touched the lives of many people and communities, embodying the Dharma path with his wisdom, warm-heartedness, and contagious expressions of joy and love.

Eric served Insight Meditation communities in the Southwest for much of his career. He occasionally offered teachings to the Flagstaff Insight Meditation Community and other groups in Flagstaff when he lived there. Notably, Eric helped pioneer some of the first Insight Meditation retreats for the LGBTQIA community. He had a special interest in “grassroots dharma,” focusing on creating spiritual communities that were democratic and non-authoritarian.

Eric’s presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy and the love he shared will continue to inspire us all.

With much metta,
The FIMC board
