What is Insight Meditation?

You can find information on our website that explains Insight Meditation here: https://flagstaffinsight.org/about/.

Do I need to be Buddhist to practice with your Sangha?

No, you don’t need to be Buddhist to practice with our Sangha. Insight Meditation is taught here in a secular manner, focusing on mindfulness and awareness. We welcome people of all faiths or no faith. The practice can benefit anyone interested in developing mindfulness, reducing stress, and gaining self-understanding. Our inclusive environment allows you to explore meditation without adopting any specific religious beliefs.

Is there instruction during the Monday night meditation sessions?

Our teachers typically offer guided meditation at the beginning, which is particularly helpful for beginners. The guidance is designed to support both new and experienced practitioners in their meditation. After the guided portion, there’s usually a period of silent meditation.

Do you offer retreats or other events?

Yes, we offer periodic silent retreats and other special events throughout the year. These retreats provide an opportunity for deeper practice and often include extended periods of silence, intensive meditation, and teachings. The duration and format of retreats can vary. To stay informed about upcoming retreats and special events, we encourage you to join our mailing list. This way, you’ll receive announcements and details as soon as they’re available. You can sign up for our mailing list on our website here: https://flagstaffinsight.org/contact/

How do I subscribe to the online newsletters?

You may sign-up to our FIMC mailing list here: https://flagstaffinsight.org/contact/.

Meeting in Person

Is the center accessible for people with disabilities?

Flagstaff Insight Meditation Community currently meets at the Beacon Unitarian Universalist Congregation. There is wheelchair access off the street and into the building.

What if I have a hearing impairment?

FIMC continues to upgrade its hybrid (zoom and in person) sound system to meet the needs of hearing impaired individuals. You are invited to sit closer to the speaker, as well as request a volume increase if you are still having difficulty hearing the speaker.

Why do I need to be fragrance free?

There are individuals that have chemical sensitivities to fragrance which exacerbates allergy like symptoms, sometimes severe. As with many retreat centers, and sanghas, we are asked to support our community members by remaining fragrance free during meditation meetings, and retreats.

Where is Beacon UU located?

Beacon Unitarian Universalist Congregation is located at 510 N. Leroux in Flagstaff, Arizona.

What should I wear to Monday night meditation sessions?

There are no special clothing requirements for our meditation sessions. We recommend wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothes that allow you to sit or move easily. The key is to wear something that won’t distract you during meditation. Layers can be helpful to adjust for room temperature. Please avoid strongly scented products out of consideration for others.

Supporting FIMC

What are the different ways I can volunteer?

There are many ways to volunteer for the Flagstaff Insight Meditation Community ranging from tech support, dana talks, greeting Monday night attendees, co-managing retreats, and co-hosting outdoor sit & socials. Please take a moment to let us know your interest in contributing to this community by contacting us by email at: volunteer@flagstaffinsight.org. Once we hear from you, a board member or community member will reach out to you with ideas and areas we are in need of volunteers. If you have any specific skill sets please mention them in your email.

How do I make a teacher donation?

Dana can be made in person by cash or check, or through the FIMC website. Some teachers have additional avenues such as Venmo.

Is there a fee for attending sessions?

No, there is no set fee for attending our meditation sessions. We operate on the principle of Dana, which is the practice of generous giving. While participation is free, we welcome voluntary donations to help support our Sangha and cover operational costs. There is a physical Dana box available at the Beacon UU for cash or check contributions. For those who prefer, we also offer the option to give Dana online through our website. Your generosity, in any amount, helps us continue offering these teachings and maintaining our meditation space.
